Choosing a Career in Fleet Management

Fleet management is an expanding industry and as such, there are numerous job opportunities for people wanting to work in this sector. It can be very rewarding – you will be able to learn lots of new skills and earn a good wage. If it’s something you’d not considered before, here are some things to think about.

Consider what your strong points are. If you are able to stay well organised, work as part of a team and comply with deadlines, you might have the right skill set for the job. Much of it will involve administrative-heavy tasks with some analysis, so if you are experienced in this kind of work and want a new challenge, consider fleet management.

You will probably need to be quite technologically-minded to succeed in this field, and some knowledge of cars may be a bonus. Fleet management tends to rely heavily on software systems and analytical tools so you will need to be able to get your head around these and interpret the results correctly. This will help you to advise fleet owners on issues such as maintenance and fuel costs.

People skills are also integral to succeeding in this role. You will spend lots of time speaking to customers, answering phone calls and responding to requests. It’s also important that you are knowledgeable about fleet management, however this is a skill that can be learned over time.
