Winter Motoring Tips for Car Owners

A number of things can seem tougher in winter. Motivating yourself to go for a run, keeping up with outdoor jobs, even just leaving the house – they all feel more difficult than usual. Unfortunately, looking after your car doesn’t become any easier either and our trusty motors are likely to take a hit during the winter months. Here are some tips for keeping your car in good working order:

  1. Invest in some decent winter tyres. Once the cold weather has subsided, you can store them at home, or pay to store them at the garage where you purchased them from ready for the following year.
  2. Have a scraper available in your car for icy weather. You can use de-icer if you prefer, but make sure you buy a decent type which won’t leave your windows smeary. Be very careful not to get it on your paintwork as it can cause damage – it’s probably advisable to use it sparingly.
  3. Ensure that you keep your screenwash topped up. In adverse weather conditions such as snow and ice you may well need to give your windscreen a thorough clean.
  4. Keep an emergency kit in your car. You should make sure that it contains practical items like a torch as well as more specific car-related items like engine oil and antifreeze.
  5. Carry your mobile phone with you at all times. You never know when you might run into difficulties and need to contact someone.
  6. Ensure that you have a spare tyre in your car and learn how to put it on. If you get a puncture when you’re in a hard-to-reach place, you’ll be grateful that you don’t have to wait for a breakdown recovery service.
